Nickie did most of the work according to the other two warming by the Christmas fire, and she did a fantastic job. It was hard to pick my favorite, but in the end, I voted for the Gingerbread houses with a Church complete with "stain-glassed" windows. I was so charmed by the people and displays that I joined the Elizabethan Gardens as a member, and can't wait to go back! Thanks for a great trip and wonderful evening... God Bless us everyone!"

Roanoke Island offers many wonderful events and festivities during this time of the year. History and tradition are important to this community and many of the events are centered around it's English heritage in addition to it's history.

The month of December is filled with special activities that begin with the Annual Lighting of the Town Christmas Tree the first Friday of December. Held in front of the historic old courthouse on Queen Elizabeth Street, it is a magical celebration full of music, spirit and joy that for over 400 years has touched the lives of Roanoke Island residents at Christmas. The celebration includes the lighting of the tree, the yule log and bonfire and of course Santa.

The Annual Christmas Parade evokes images of a Norman Rockwell painting with all the small town charm you would expect. Local schools, charities and businesses build floats, sing and dance through Manteo's Downtown Waterfront to the excitement of all the children and adults alike. Elizabethan Christmas Carolers can be found throughout the weekend bringing cheer. All of December and well into January, there are events through out The Outer Banks. The Elizabethan Gardens' Grand Illumination, the Island Farm's Christmas Past, First in Flight Holiday Lights and so many more events!

Thanksgiving is upon us and we here at the White Doe Inn are blessed to have so many coming to join us this year. November may be the off season for us here on the Outer Banks but there is still plenty to see and do for visitors. The 3rd Annual Outer Banks Gobbler 5K and Little Giblet Fun Run, presented by the Outer Banks Running Club, will be held Thanksgiving Day at 8:00 am in Nags Head. Watch the night sky magically transform as kites with lights glow in the sky atop Jockey's Ridge State Park on November 26th with Kites with Lights.

December is right around the corner, and brings with it all the festivities downtown at the Manteo Waterfront. December 2nd is First Friday and also marks Manteo's Annual Tree Lighting and Celebration. The Elizabethan Gardens presents Grand Illuminations on December 3rd, a perfect evening event. Many of our guests that are booked for this weekend have a standing reservation, they know how magical it is here at this time of year. White Doe Inn unveils the Tower Suite, a Luxury Suite on the Outer Banks NC

We are proud to announce the opening of the long awaited Tower Suite at The White Doe Inn. By far the largest of all the bedchambers at this circa 1910 home, it has been a satisfying journey to finish the last room in the house. The size of the Tower Suite allowed owners Bebe and Bob to offer many more amenities in this suite than in any other room of the house. With honeymooners and extended romantic getaways in mind, this suite is elegant and private.

This suite offers a king size bed, a flat screened television, and a beautiful illuminating wall of candles in the bedroom. The large bath offers black marble tile, a large clawfoot tub that sit under beautiful stained glass windows and separate shower. A White Doe Inn Wedding Event

The White Doe Inn specializes in small intimate weddings. Weddings at the Inn are planned on the lawn, however sometimes the weather has a different plan. This wedding was one of those occasions, so the Inn was transformed inside to hold the ceremony and host a sit down dinner for 20. Having booked the entire Inn for their guests, The White Doe Inn was able to accommodate the bride and groom's wishes to create a "weekend event".

Deborah was absolutely stunning as she descended the staircase. The ceremony was held in the parlor where Robert Woody officiated. The crystal chandelier's soft light danced in the mirrors during the ceremony and three course dinner. Deborah collected and made all the decorations herself, including the table decor and set up, each piece holding a special meaning. Everything sparkled, the chandeliers and the flickering table candles, it was entirely magical!

The Mother Vine Wines Produced by Dublin Winery

The Scuppernong grape grew wild along the shores of the Outer Banks when the first English settlers arrived in 1587 to begin a new life in the New World. Since that time, these delicious grapes have been enjoyed by many throughout Europe and America. The Mother Vine is located on Roanoke Island, a small coastal community in North Carolina that has tended and protected the vine through the years while enjoying the succulent fruit.

Many local residents recall growing up on the island and spending hours searching out the vines to pick and eat the grapes. One could stand in one spot and eat their fill. Wines and jellies were also favorites that were made from the fruit and served with hot breads and cheeses.

The Scuppernong grape is the official fruit of North Carolina. In May, 2005 a new vineyard was planted using cuttings from this Mother Vine and in July, 2008 the first Premium Scuppernong was produced and released by Duplin Winery. It was the first wine in over 100 years to be produced from the native Mother Vine, the oldest vine in America.

One of the many legends handed down about The Mother Vine tells us that over 400 years ago, there was a great love shared between two people. From her beauty and their great love, came the Mother Vine which produced a sweet, white fruit unlike any other. It is a lovely legend about Virginia Dare and a love that transcended all others. A Winter Wonderland on the Island

Christmas has passed and we are all looking to the New Year that is fast approaching. We actually had a late Christmas surprise of snow here on Roanoke Island and the Outer Banks. As fleeting as it was, our coastal little town of Manteo looked beautiful covered in a blanket of snow.

Take a Closer look at the picture ... what do you see?

The White Doe Inn was known as the Theodore Meekins Home and is one of the most photographed homes on Roanoke Island. Originally built as a story and a half in 1898, it was finished in 1910 as a Queen Ann Victorian style home. It was lovingly restored by Bebe & Robert Woody in 1995.

I have been working at The White Doe Inn for the past 12 years now. I have to say in that time many strange things have been witnessed by staff and guests alike. It only seems to be in the off-season when the house becomes quieter and less hectic that we really notice these things. Not to say the house is haunted, but there are some things that happen that are peculiar and may indicate that some house guests just keep coming back. It used to start with one certain closet door, it opened on its own. The closet had a very distinct sound as it opened and when it did open on its own you could even hear the latch click. We have since removed the door and made the closet into a wine pantry. Then there are the CD players. It's like a game we play, which room is playing music this morning? No one has been in the Inn for the past few nights yet music is playing in one of the rooms. We search it out, turn it off, check all the other rooms and tomorrow music will be playing in another room regardless.

One December afternoon the owner and I were standing at the bottom of the staircase talking and the sound of a door shutting came from above. She asked me who else was in the house to which I replied "Just you and me." Lights turn on and off, empty rooms page the front desk and don't think for a moment that the oddities only happen when night falls. Ask my housekeeping staff of the occasional shadow lurking in a doorway or disappearing down the hall.

I am not saying the house has ghosts, it is after all a very old house. Old houses have sounds, even if it is a tune being lightly whistled, doors that never really quite shut no matter how many times you check it. I would like to think someone was watching over this eloquent old home and all of us that work here. We are a romantic bed and breakfast and pride ourselves in the service we provide our guests. Should you decide you would like to enjoy a quiet reprieve please come visit us. We'll do our best to make sure nothing goes bump in the night.

Hi, I'm Sterling, the Littlest Innkeeper at The White Doe Inn. My job today is to pick fresh strawberries right from the fields especially for you. First I need to eat my fill to make sure they are just right for serving at The White Doe Inn and our guests.

I had to sample them first to make sure they were deliciously ripe and sun kissed. They were so good I ate my fill and now the rest go to the inn for you.

Miss Lisa, the Inn's Chef, does the most amazing things with strawberries, but my favorite is ...

Chocolate Dipped Strawberries ... which you can order for your stay at The White Doe Inn.

Just for you, I sneaked out one of the strawberry breakfast fruit dishes used at the inn. I know Miss Lisa won't mind and it will be something special you can do at home.

Apricot-Glazed Strawberries ...

2 Tablespoons Jam, Apricot

1/2 Teaspoon Cinnamon

1Pkg Strawberries

2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar

1/4 Cup Walnuts

In a small saucepan over medium heat, stir apricot jam until soft and warm. Set aside to cool. MEANWHILE, stir together brown sugar, cinnamon and nuts. Place berries in a mixing bowl and pour heated jam over them. Toss gently to lightly coat the berries. Sprinkle with brown-sugar-walnut mixture and mix lightly. Divide in stemmed glasses or bowls to serve. NOTE, To toast walnuts heat oven to 375 degrees. Spread nuts on cookie sheet and bake until browned, about 5 minutes, checking often.
