2016 Hang Gliding Spectacular – Outer Banks, NC

One of the things we love about the Outer Banks is that it is a place to which people come back year after year. As owners of a bed and breakfast, this means we get to see old friends who come back to stay with us and locals get to regularly meet and greet familiar faces. There are also many annual events and activities that draw people to come and visit and one of the most popular ones, the Hang Gliding Spectacular is coming up May 13-16, 2016.

Taking place in Nags Head, NC, the Hang Gliding Spectacular is an annual event that is celebrating its 44th anniversary this year. The main motto is simply to have fun and this event lives up to its name. It is always the third week in may and 60 competitors from all over trek over to fly, meet up with old friends, and just enjoy a week of fun.

It all starts out with a Dune Competition where the pilots have to maneuver around pylons and land in specific targets. If the weather is just right they also have a duration competition, which is very exciting to watch. Everyone then heads over to Kitty Hawk Kites Flight Park for the Aero Towing Competition, which involves duration and altitude tests, beanbag bomb drops, and spot landing tests. They will also be offering hang glider demos and seminars here as well. To top it all off, everyone will gather for the Woody Jones Memorial Street Dance on Saturday night. There is also a Rogallo Foundation Hall of Fame ceremony and dinner every year to honor someone who has made important contributions to the sport. If you are a hang gliding you can still register for this event but for those just visiting, all spectators are welcome to attend the events. It is quite impressive watching these courageous and talented gliders take to the skies.

Check our blog often as we are always sharing about fun things to do and enjoy here on the Outer Banks. The sun is shining, the weather is perfect and the beaches are waiting! Book a getaway online today or contact us for further information about our inn or the Manteo area.
