Ready, Set, Go! Spend a Day in Manteo, NC

When you end up with a day off, what is your go-to activity? For some, a coffee, book and blanket on the front porch sounds like a great idea. Others may choose to catch up on the to-do list and get things cleaned out or tend to the garden and landscaping. Perhaps you would choose to catch up with a friend or visit family and just maybe you are the type who would prefer to do nothing!

The White Doe Inn is located on Roanoke Island in the quaint, waterfront town of Manteo, NC. Beautiful beaches and a myriad of wonderful things to do and see surround us. Whether you are visiting us for a day, the weekend or longer or possibly are even a local looking for a new adventure, we thought it would be fun to highlight what you could do in our wonderful area.

Guests of the White Doe Inn start the day off in style with the most delicious gourmet breakfast. Our serene back deck and veranda is the perfect place to enjoy your meal. For a bit of indulgence and special treatment, we suggest booking an appointment with one of our soothing Spa services. A massage or facial will prepare you for the day ahead. Next, head over to the Elizabethan Gardens—get lost exploring the exquisite gardens and learn a bit of our area’s history. If you have some eager young ones along, it is worth stopping at the North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island afterwards to check out the sharks and maybe even touch a stingray. Next, you’ll want to fill your hungry stomachs with a delicious lunch. There are many great places—it can be hard to choose! Get a super sand which at The Hungry Pelican or indulge in crab legs at Stripers Bar and Grille.

For the afternoon, get a once in a lifetime glimpse of the Outer Banks from the air on a Coastal Helicopters ride. View wild ponies, lighthouses and marine life—a truly memorable experience. If that inspires you to spend some time on the water, rent a kayak or take a fishing charter with an experienced guide who can show you the best spots. Make plans to take in the Lost Colony outdoor theatre show in the evening and learn about the true history of Roanoke Island. Before that though, make a reservation at 1587 Restaurant for dinner—if you show your Lost Colony tickets you can get 20% off your meal!

When your day is over, head back “home” to the White Doe Inn to relax and get refreshed. We love hearing about our guest’s adventures! Ask about our 24-hour butler's wine pantry, enjoy a cappuccino on the porch or read a book by the fireplace.  We are located close to all of the action that Manteo has to offer. The possibilities and fun are endless so make your plans to come and see us soon! Reach us at (800) 473-6091 for reservation information.

Captain Johnny's Outer Banks Dolphin Tours – Manteo, NC

There is something special about witnessing animals in their natural habitat. In the waters along the Outer Banks, we have the privilege of being able to catch glimpses of bottlenose dolphins that frequent our area. Dolphins are such beautiful, playful animals that capture the hearts of the young and old. Captain Stuart Wescott has a bursting passion for dolphins and for sharing that with others. This is why he offers dolphin tours aboard his boat, Captain Johnny.

Wescott is a 9th generation Outer Banks native and has a valuable understanding of the rich history of the area. His dolphin cruises begin in May and continue through October. The boat has a large viewing area so you don’t have to worry about finding a great spot and there is a sun protected area as well as a restroom on board. Starting in June the most popular cruise is the Guaranteed Dolphin Watch. This is a two-hour cruise on which you will be provided with a very informative narration along the way and may even witness dolphin mating and birthing.

If you are looking for a private charter cruise, you can choose the Pelican Island Cruise Bird Watch and watch commercial fishermen, see the Bodie Island Lighthouse, Osprey nests (many have chicks already), and Pelican Island, home to over 4,000 varieties of birds. If you would like a fun hands-on experience the whole family would enjoy, you can hop aboard the Shrimping-Crabbing Cruise. Finally, one of the most popular times on the Captain Johnny is The Sunset Dolphin Watch—the sun setting over Albemarle Sound while relaxing on a wonderful boat and dolphins in the background is simply the perfect setting. Get your tickets early for this one as it usually sells out fast!

You can find more information about this one-of-a-kind adventure on their website and if you are in town for the evening, a weekend or even a whole week, we would love to host you at White Doe Inn. Our relaxing, elegant inn along the shores of Shallowbag Bay is the perfect home away from home with all of the amenities to make you relaxed and refreshed. Plan your stay today and call us at (800) 473-6091 for reservation information.
