2014 Hang Gliding Spectacular & Air Show—Nags Head, NC

Imagine standing on the edge of a great sand dune. The wind is blowing over and around your glider and then suddenly you feel that perfect timing to rush off the edge and you feel the glider lift off the ground—now it is just you and the birds, with the beauty of Jockey’s Ridge State Park all around you. Ahhh…the life of a hang glider! The Hang Gliding Spectacular and Air Show is coming up May 16-19, 2014 and will stay true to its name as it celebrates the sport and offers participants and viewers a spectacular weekend of fun and flying.

The first concept of a real glider actually came in 1804 and since then, many inventions and changes have been made of course to make it as modern and streamlined as possible. It is still simple though as the pilot is harnessed below the airframe and controls it by shifting his body weight.

In its 42nd year, this event is actually the longest running hang gliding competition in the world. Amateurs and professionals with a passion for this sport meet at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head, NC for a weekend of meeting old and new friends, loads of fun and of course, flying! This great event is an Outer Banks tradition. It is free to the public for viewing and there will be a host of fun activities going on the whole family can take part in. There will be a dune competition, aero tow, street dance and Rogallo Hall of Fame induction ceremony—and that is just the beginning. It truly is quite the sight to see these brave pilots masterfully manage their hang gliders as they swoop and glide so peacefully through the air.
