Winter Lights at the Elizabethan Gardens – Manteo, NC

Would you like a little bit of Christmas light history? The tradition of using small lights to brighten a Christmas tree dates back to the middle of the 17th Century. At first small candles were used, then lanterns, and then in 1890 the first string of electric Christmas lights was invented by a man named Edward Johnson. A tragic fire from using candles on a tree challenged a man named Albert Sadacca to invent safe electric lights for Christmas trees. The idea took off and his company became the largest Christmas lighting company in the world.

We certainly cannot continue talking about holiday lights without mentioning the incredible Winter Lights display at the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, NC. The Outer Banks is a fantastic spot to visit during the holiday season as so many local places and businesses truly get into the spirit of the holidays and put on some wonderful events. The gardens are transformed into an illuminated winter wonderland with spectacular holiday displays and traditional décor. The entire display is simply magical and truly embodies the Christmas spirit—it is just a great place to spend the day. Admire miniature snow globes, gingerbread houses, a beautiful nativity scene, and more. Roast marshmallows around the fire pit on the Great Lawn, enjoy live music performances, and stroll around the Twelve Days of Christmas displays located throughout the gardens. Winter Lights will be open from December 2nd, 2014 – January 3rd, 2015 and the tickets are $10/adults, $8/children 6-12, and $5/children five and under.
