Outer Banks Seafood Festival, October 18-19, 2013

There's nothing better than fresh seafood from the Outer Banks.  In October we celebrate these delicious samplings from our waters with the Outer Banks Seafood Festival!  Located just 6 miles from The White Doe Inn, we know that you will find our inn the perfect home-base while you enjoy this festival, October 18-19, 2013.

The Outer Banks area has a long history of commercial fishing, it's way of life for many generations of families.  My Grandfather fished these waters all his life. Back in the day, he was able to build two family homes with a single catch of fish.  Life was much simpler then.  Folks here lived off the land and the water.  Off shore fish were considered trash fish…not to be eaten.  Only seafood that came from the sounds were considered good eating.  The industry today is much different; with huge off shore trawlers over fishing the waters, pollution flowing down our rivers  into the sounds and global demands  putting more pressure on our natural resources.  We struggle to preserve a way of life and the resources that have always sustained us.  The Outer Banks Seafood Festival was created in 2012 to bring awareness to this legacy, and to gain support for the preservation of the seafood industry.

At the festival you will find exhibits, live presentations, local arts and crafts, and a variety of performing artists on the Main Festival Stage.  Listen to the Outer Banks Catch Family Reef Retreat as they offer family friendly performances.  Join folks at the Catch Kitchen for cooking demonstrations in the preparation of seafood as it was prepared in the past as well as today.  Walk over to the Trawler Treasure Trove where you can learn all about the fishing industry, and and how it has grown through the years. Then participate in the exciting events at the Fish House Olympics.  It's a full day of activities.  For a detailed schedule of events, check out the event schedule.

After a day full of fun and lots of delicious seafood return to The White Doe Inn for a relaxing evening by a cozy fire with a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of wine. We look forward to hearing from you as you make your plans to join us for this great event.
